Ok Kool-Aid drinkers, time to admit the obvious--you were wrong. (That means *you* Darrell.) In other news, the market continues its Bear Market Rally today. This may last longer than a week before we see a retesting of lows. And other analysts are putting those at about 7800 rather than the 7500 I've been using. Ok, I can accept that. The recent intraday low was 7773.71, even though previous intraday lows in this range from 2003 were as low as 7181. posted by Desert Cat @ 11:56 AM | permalink Early Balloting in Florida Not Good For ObamaPUMAs are winning Florida for John McCain!
Comments
From the link--Democrats enjoy a 2:1 registration advantage in Florida, and Real Clear Politics has Obama up 3.5%. Early balloting already totals 35% of the 2004 totals, and of these ballots, Democrat ballots outnumber Republican ballots by 6.4%. Yet despite this substantial numerical advantage based upon party affiliation, McCain is winning by 4%! Can U say "McCain Democrats"? Ah knew ya could. :) :) Turnout is obviously key, Republicans, but even if you have "undecided" Democrat friends that you can give a ride to the polls, it will probably help. A lot of undecided Democrats just can't quite stomach the notion of a hard left/socialist/communist in office, and a "moderate" RINO like McCain gives them an out. It should help them that true conservatives and libertarians don't like McCain at all, but this year he is all we have to throw in the gap against the storm. And as I told Doom, *I* for one, have to live in this country after the election. It is all fine and dandy to hold to purist standards when one may do so from a perch atop the Swiss Alps, as does Vox. But the bottom line is that one candidate is *much worse* than the other and I am doing myself and my country no favors by throwing it to the wolves because neither candidate is "pristine enough". If we waited for the "perfect candidate" before getting out and voting, we'd be calling each other 'comrade' at our labors in the gulag within a decade. Ah, before I go on a further tear about how many of the Ilk frustrate and irritate me by their useless attitudes and approaches, I will cut this missive short. I have work to do. Update: A commenter at Ace's place sums it up well--"You know what's really f****d up about this whole election cycle? The fact that Obama is so bad that we are waxing nostalgic for Hillary Clinton." Update 2: One more clarification--it is not only that one candidates positions are that much worse by themselves, it is the fact that if polls bear out he would likely be able to implement them fully with no effective opposition from the other party. *That* is what makes it so much worse! The best that a libertarian can hope for in these times is government gridlock. At least in the '90's, Billy Bob was hampered by a Republican Congress. Giving The One a compliant House and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate would be a huge catastrophe. If McCain has to lock horns with the Dems and with the conservative elements of his own party, that would be a *good good* thing for libertarians. The more acrimony the better! UPDATE! More evidence here that the same trend is showing in Nevada early polling! With a 55% to 29% Democrat advantage in the early ballots, Obama is only ahead 50% to 48%, which means Independents are breaking heavily toward McCain, together with some Democrats. And this is just in Clark County where most of the Democrats live. The rest of the state is heavily Republican country. I still expect to see it tested at least once or twice before the bottom is established (or *not* established if it fails). Y'know it just occurred to me, we often see this kind of volatility at the top of a bubble, just before it bursts. My hunch is that this isn't even close to a bottom right now. There's a lot of anxiety, people wanting to push it higher, wanting to prove a bottom, but you don't typically see this kind of churning at bottoms. Israel. Hung out to dry. See, some of you people seem to think I'm some kind of nut, spouting off about the "end of the world" with no rational basis. But like Ron Paul (see post below), I do have good reasons for my views. The world sees the US as Israel's only hope of survival. And if the US (via President Obama) pulls its support, it *will* precipitate the final showdown over the existence of Israel. No matter how you slice it, that will get ugly, because Israel will almost certainly use its nuclear weapons in its own defense. It just happens that those of my eschatological bent believe that Israel has one more Champion, not of this world, who plans to show up for the event, and so we see the turn of the leaf in all of this, signifying the season. Now other polls show them still trailing by larger margins (although there is significant question about the validity of their party balance assumptions), so it's still uphill from here. But there's plenty of reason to not give up hope. A side note: This poll is conducted by a bipartisan group consisting of Lake Research Partners (liberal) and The Tarrance Group (conservative), so perhaps it is less biased than some of the polls conducted by partisan media outlets. Also worth noting is that 6% are still reporting as "undecided" in this poll. Folks, this race is still wide open! Update: More here at Ace's Place. Ok, let me lay out for you just what I mean by questionable "party balance assumptions". The recent Pew Research Poll shows an incredible 14% lead for Obama nationally. However when you dig into the guts of the poll, you discover that they presumed a weighted party affiliation of 31% Republican, 37% Democrat, and 28% Independent (calculated using total registered voters in the denominator). Also (apparently) 100 people registered to vote are registered with a third party (total registered voters is 100 higher than total of R, D, and I--about 4%??), and 417 people aren't even registered to vote (and therefore cannot vote), yet their answers were apparently included in the survey results. If you look at this chart, the actual party affiliation of voters on election day 2006, based on exit polls was 39% Democrat, 36% Republican, (and presumably 25% Independent, Other, or no answer)--a 3% voter turnout advantage to Democrats. So not only is this Pew Research poll including the opinions of people who cannot vote, and people who are unlikely to vote, it is overstating the likely percentage of Democrat voters by about 3%! Now just try to tell me this poll is not badly skewed! Contrast this with the internals of the Battleground Poll. Their survey is almost exclusively of likely voters (98%). They do not explicitly state their party affiliation numbers, but it is easy to back out of the results (use generic congressional ballot results, solve 3 equations in 3 unknowns using party affiliation percentages and total percentages). The calculation yields 39% Republican, 43% Democrat, and 17% Independent. That's a four percent voter turnout advantage to Democrats--much more in line with historical trends. So-o. Which poll do I believe? Why yes, yes! The one that uses the more reasonable and historically accurate methodology! Oh and to my commenter, you may find upon digging into this that the many state polls you are relying upon are more likely to use the screwy methods of the Pew Research people to get their glowing numbers for The One. "Why do this," you may ask? Well to dispirit conservatives and suppress conservative voter turnout, of course! If your state or local polls show your guy down by 15% and the opposition already measuring for new curtains in the White House, are you as likely to show up as if you saw it was a tight 2-3% race? DON'T BUY IT CONSERVATIVES!!! It's a lie. Go vote. I'd say "early and often" except that is a Democrap technique that we don't stoop to. And Democrats? Please ignore this whole post. I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm sure your guy will coast right into the White House! No need to inconvenience yourself on Election Day. Isn't there something good on TV that day? More here: The Left's Big Blunder. And here: Jim Geraghty And one final piece of good news: Leaked Obama internal polls show him within margin of error in Pennsylvania. Wonder why McCain's campaigning there--a state where he is supposedly losing badly according to public polls? Heh! UPDATE: New AP poll confirms these results. +10 to Obama in the total sample, +5 to Obama among registered voters, and +1 among likely voters--statistically dead even. Germany takes hot seat as Europe falls into the abyss - Telegraph Chancellor Angela Merkel has been forced to pull her head out of the sand, guaranteeing all German savings, a day after she rebuked Ireland for doing much the same thing. Reality intrudes. More at "read the rest", including an insightful comment to this article. From commenter Errol Flynn With that said, I have a question about the medium term future once we have got past 'stabilizing the ship.' Do we allow continued moves to currency unification, or do we say enough is enough? Do we accept that ever more centralization is systemically destabilizing (and may possibly take us directly to fascism) and that what we must oppose is any more 'le grande' ideas of further Euro expansion and (waiting quietly in the wings) the arrival of the Amero? From commenter Toby, who is right--he won't be much affected because he's not plugged into the crashing system In response to some comments about Republicans. My conservative Republican friends and I here in the mountains of Pennsylvania all drive old trucks paid for with cash, although we can hardly afford to put gas in them anymore. No big deal, they are just a luxury. We do see the fat cat Democrats when we get down to the city driving around in their SUVs, they sure would come in handy here on the farm, but why they need them in town I don't know. I do know that the whole financial collapse thing won't have much affect here however. I can still expand my garden and hunt to provide for my family. I'll put my boys outback to chop firewood for the woodstove. The Arabs can keep there oil for all I care. Maybe if there is a collapse Obama will understand why we cling to our guns (for our livelyhood) and our Bibles (to thank God for giving us all we need to survive), this enables us to prosper without the Democrats putting their nose in our business. Obama can keep his wacko ideas in the city or better yet in whatever country he came from. We don't need him or any other foreigner, or his money. I say to him just leave us alone. The Associated Press: Dow plunges 800 points amid global sell-off "It's hard to exaggerate how bad things are. Things are still profoundly dislocated," T.J. Marta, fixed-income analyst at RBC Capital Markets, told The Associated Press. "Good Job Brownie!" Only this time it is the architects of the 1995 CRA and the Fannie/Freddie managers (Democrat cronies) who are watching their "city" drown. So much for the ballyhooed "bailout's" salutary effects on the markets. The crew has already slipped overboard--abandoned the ship... TO THE LIFEBOATS!!! THEY'VE ABANDONED US! Update: Oh, and to make your Monday perfect, here's news that Obama plans to win using Massive Voter Fraud and legal wrangling that will make the 2000 Florida debacle look like kindergarten play. Worried yet? You should be. I'm an optimist. Oct 1, 2008 Financial Tsunami: The End of the World as we Knew it--F. William Engdahl posted by Desert Cat @ 9:04 AM | permalink Saturday, October 04, 2008FlagstaffOk, I have finally gotten to some of my photos from our recent short vacation in Flagstaff, Arizona. Our primary mission was hiking, hopefully in the fall colors, but that was not to be. We were about two weeks early for the full bloom of the aspens. Nevertheless it was a pleasant few days of hiking in the high country.

Monday afternoon we arrived, and after lunch at the Beaver Street Brewery and a quick stop at Babbitt's for a topographic hiking map, we headed to Campbell Mesa for a quick hike before sunset. Nothing spectacular on this hike, just trees and meadows above a subdivision. The next morning we had breakfast at the Crown Railroad Cafe (not recommended--they served me a rotten porkchop with my breakfast), we headed for the Fat Man Loop in the Elden Lookout area. The hike is named for a spot on the trail known as the Fat Man Crack. Daisycat had no trouble negotiating this spot. I had a bit of difficulty however. The trail climbed to give some nice overlooks of the Flagstaff area, and along the way we took a bunch of photos of grasses and flowers and trees, that I will group together in the next post. If I were Catholic, this might have excited me. About 2/3 through the trail loop there is a giant boulder with a natural grotto wherein can be seen an image of the virgin Mary. If you blow up the image you can see facial features in that whitish area near the top, and the remainder of the lichens give the impression of a blue and green dress. That afternoon we hiked to Bismarck Lake, through woods and open meadows to a little pond (hey, this is Arizona, even ponds are called lakes, ok?) Thursday was the best hike! We started just below the Arizona Snow Bowl on the Kachina Trail and hiked about halfway before stopping for lunch. This hike is at a substantially higher elevation than most of the hikes of the previous two days, and it shows in the different vegetation. This area has deep pine forest areas punctuated by meadows and aspen groves. Right about now, the aspens should be turning color and this would be an even more fantastic dayhike. Finally Friday morning we hiked to the old Veit homestead site. There were three springs at the site. The first was Indian Spring, so named for the rock art near the entrance to the shallow cave holding the spring. This first image is from about fifteen feet inside the cave entrance. The water is caught in this pool and then piped out. The second spring was enclosed in the cliff face itself. And the third spring was a few yards downhill from the cliff in a stone building. All three springs were supposed to feed a small pond at the site, but the pond was dry. The cabin was more of a hut with a low door. There was another cabin at the site at one time (Jenks cabin), but there was little trace of it today. And then we went home. More pics to come (maybe tomorrow) of grasses and leaves and trees (oh my!)
