Sunday, January 30, 2011Progress PicsI spent part of the weekend chained to my desk working on tax drudgery, but not as much as last weekend.

I ordered six olive trees, and they surprised me by showing up *very* quickly. I thought I might have another week to work on stuff.  Locoweed is checking them out. What I needed to do was some earth shaping. I wanted to create a broad swale to act as a catch basin for runoff water, retaining it long enough to soak in around the trees whenever heavy rain caused overland water flow. Li'l Kitty laid down a *lot* of tracks this weekend!  But then late Sunday afternoon I busted the scraper blade again when I snagged a branch unawares. This is as far as I got on the second row.  I had hoped to plant at least the first row of four, but the day ran out before the work was done. They will have to sit in the shade another week.  The olive trees are for olive oil. One of the things that keeps preppers up at night is the problem of storing dietary oils. The bottom line is that they don't store well. The best you can usually expect is two years at room temperature. Canned lard and butter is supposed to last longer, and frozen cans of olive oil can keep indefinitely, but the better solution is to grow your own oil, just like the long term food problem is solved by setting up to grow or raise your own. As long time readers know, we tried peanuts with mixed success, and last year's failed crop worried me. They are not reliable here unfortunately. Sunflowers could produce oil, but birds love the dickens out of sunflowers and it would be costly and time-consuming to try to protect a big enough sunflower crop from birds to be worth extracting the oil. I don't know why I didn't think of olives before, but they are supposed to grow here, and they represent a permaculture solution to the problem. Once established they require minimal watering, fertilizing and care. At harvest time in the fall you knock the fruit off the trees onto sheets or tarps, gather it up, crush or press it out and extract the oil in one of a couple different ways. Voila! Problem solved. And one of the varieties is supposed to start bearing as soon as two years from planting, so the permanent solution could be online soon enough. I had an inspiration about the motor that turned out to work just fine and I got it reassembled. Turns out the problem was in the spade lug connectors where they had overheated, melted together and had developed high resistance.

 Despite what else I had to do this weekend, I could not let sleeping Li'l Kitty's lie. I worked on the millet field, moving dirt around to level the area and create a berm that will permit flood irrigation.  It is not quite done being leveled yet. It is too bowl shaped, and the west side is still maybe 6 inches too high compared to the east end.  Clyde sez, "Thanks for the new Giant Size litterbox, dad!" The rest of this weekend I chained myself to my desk in the dungeon, to do a bunch of drudgerous paperwork related to the upcoming tax season. I am seeing the end of this portion of it, although I have a handful of things yet to address. This year I have hired a high-power tax CPA to do my taxes, because of the complications involved in having "cancellation of debt" income. There is a huge amount of documentation I need to pull together, and she will take that to write up an exemption from taxation over that phantom, imputed income. *Very* worth what I will have to pay her and the work I will have to do to get there, because it would otherwise translate into an $8000 tax liability! So if I seem a little pasty-faced and anemic this week, it is because I did not get my usual quota of sunshine. From the weekend before last, I finished the repairs to Daisycat's gas bicycle, then got back to working on the solar tower. The last north side panel went up, but it was a hair too long. I had to trim it to length, balancing carefully on a ladder 25 feet in the air.

 Later I did more digging around the stump in the wheat field.  While test driving Daisycat's bicycle, I noticed that the shiny galvanized wind turbine was glaringly obvious against the backdrop of the hills from certain angles along the road in the direction I don't normally see. I decided this is far too likely to prompt the curious to investigate. In fact, while working on the tower this last weekend, a pickup truck stopped on the road to eyeball what I was up to. So this recent weekend the turbine came down, got painted a color that makes it disappear nicely into the background of the hills, and went back up.  Now from the road the black legs of the tower are easier to see than the turbine. I installed the standoff and brackets that will hold the cellphone antenna pole,  ...and mounted the antenna to the pole, which was painted to match the turbine.  Stymied here because I need to buy some bare copper wire for the lightning arrestor ground to be installed next weekend. I also installed the framing at the top of the tower that will hold the top shutter. This shutter will be open in summer to vent the house, and closed in winter to permit the capture of hot air in the tower to be piped back down for heating purposes in the house.  Next weekend it can be installed, together with the ropes and pulleys necessary to operate it from the ground. Finally I got started doing some leveling in the future millet field with Li'l Kitty and the repaired scraper blade that Daisycat brought to the welding shop for me. Unfortunately the linear actuator that runs the rear implements conked out and I was left hanging again. I have a new one coming, ordered from the internet.  Ultimately I want to convert this little tractor to hydraulic operation but I have neither the time, nor the money nor the skills (yet) to do this conversion. So in the interim it is still going to be operated by electric actuators. Hours after opening her eyes for the first time, doctors are performing “aggressive physical therapy” on U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and are nothing short of astounded by her progress. I have hesitated to say what I know out of concern that some of you may assume I am as loco as the assailant (only in a different way), but here goes: I have been aware of a tremendous outpouring of prayer power on behalf of Gabby, and in the Spirit I have observed a phenomenal, I mean in all my experience as a Christian intercessor I cannot say I have ever seen a stronger, more powerful presence of the Lord's healing manifestation over a person, ever. Her progress is miraculous, and not by coincidence. We are witnessing a genuine miracle in progress. I've been in prayer on again off again since I learned of this Sunday afternoon. Wendesday morning however I was particularly plugged in and felt the effects of their reduction of sedation, hours before I read of what they were doing. It was nothing short of horrifying for her at first as she began to grapple with what had happened to her and the nauseating contemplation of the possible extent and implications of her injuries. Also there was breakthrough pain from the surgeries that have removed much of her left skull. She is doing better now and is clearly one heckuva fighter. Those of you who have been praying, THANK YOU! It has made all the difference in the world this time. This is the Arizona I am proud of. Two men and one 61 year old woman stopped the rampage, at extreme risk to their own lives. Guest Post: Situational Awareness And Shared Awareness | zero hedge What you don't know (or choose not to know) can kill you. -------------------- Update, from the comment section: Of the Synagogue of Satan Note please, that I do not buy the "it's the joooooz!" line that many ethnic bigots spout, and yet the ethnic heritage of a significant contingent of TPTB is hard to avoid noticing. Therefore, take this rather extended comment/essay in that light. It is about "big picture" situational awareness, and is at least a perspective worth considering. The best solution on the personal level (and even on the small-scale collective level) is to refuse to participate. Refuse to use credit. Refuse to do more than is necessary for your personal and family comfort. Refuse in small ways and large to make yourself available for "harvest". I have said it before and will say it again, any labor you perform for yourself and your family is not taxable in any way at present. Don't work harder for fiat dollars. Work harder for yourself. "Specialization is for insects", as the saying goes. The economic efficiencies of specialization are largely eaten up by the overclass before they benefit the individual. It is why they pushed women out of the home and into the workforce via feminism. All that value being created at the family level that they could not tap into and bleed off was just too much. Push Mommy into a job where she could be properly *taxed*, not only on her income, but on every outside transaction she would now have to make to replace what her labor in the home used to provide! We have the power to fight this, right down at the individual level, but it takes Situational Awareness to realize what is required. Ok, let's just call a-spade-a-spade, for about ten minutes here; No one who is paying attention believes usurer-media anymore. They lie about everything, to maintain this completely fraudulent 'reality', which the working slaves don't have the time to examine for reality, or veracity. Our Govt and corporate klepto-slavers keep us busy, tired and distracted with CSI murder-action utter drivel as 'entertainment', punctuated by genuinely idiot-generating 'commercials', for rubbish we definitely don't need, thus they maintain the shallow charade, with negligible resistance. The solution is work only as much as you must and don't go into debt, and don't get too worn out. They want you worn out and in debt. If you are in debt, default, and then you are not. It really is about that simple to get out of debt, if you really want to, and why wouldn't you? This allows you time to be more aware of their lies, and the pervasive inconsistencies with prevailing circumstances, and look into why they insist on enslaving us. The Govt and social organizations bang-on and on about 'PARTICIPATION' as this is the simplest structural social weapon they can utilize to suppress the ability to pay attention, to learn, or to act to protect our genuine personal and social community interests. As it turns out, an under-employed population is a more serious threat to these slavers and Pigmen because these people can pay more attention and so become more skeptical and aware, and So the slavers essentially try to pay more, especially to induce the younger aspirants to keep busy, and thus buy more useless shit and engage in dumb trivial activities (when young and dumb). Then in parallel attack the under-employed (as they age and become more aware) to keep them impoverished or feeling a totally fake-guilt, merely for not being good and 'productive' little slave for the usurers. Plus to help make sure they are progressively marginalized, then ostracized, for being less affluent, via maintaining an idiotic division of fake classes, based on how much money they levered, and how high their credit limit grew to via sucking up to THEIR TPTB. All social divisions are accentuated for that very purpose whilst they make a great swanning-pretense of "healing social divisions". But really, they are fully mobilized to generate the opposite of social cohesion, in every situation, they always find ways to make money off the results, and also the material demands of such divisions. They play the upside and downsides of the young, and they play the downside and the upside of the older. Be it profiteering from private prisons, selling weapons to their private 'police', or running illegal drugs into suburbia via supposed security agencies they systematically infiltrated and entirely run without any recourse, for they are above the 'Law'. All of it makes the usurers vast sums of money. So even in the process of dividing and destroying us to conquer, they make vast profits out of our scalps, even as they militate and bring about our decay. It reminds one of those BS Hollywood movies, where the nasty SS guard pulls gold teeth out of the mouths of some murdered usurer. The reality is just the reverse, they are doing this to us, in numerous ways today. The IMF is the ultimate usurer's gold tooth extractor. Did we not know what usurers were? Was there not historical precedent to warn us of what they had done before to other countries, and would seek to do again? So why are they now into everything, and running everything and this was allowed by the people who's job it was (I'm looking at you defense forces of the USA) to make sure this never happened, and was never possible? Where were OUR 'Elders'? You know those phony old geezers in the halls of power who are SUPPOSED to be aware of such things, and warn us of them in advance? What else are such feeble old geysers for, if not to warn us of such long-run things, and outcomes, and dangers? Were none of these old farts on OUR side? Apparently none of them were standing the watch for us! The 'fore-fathers' may have been, but what you have there now, and recently, were, at best, total idiots, or traitors (either way, feel free to guillotine with complete abandon as you won't be in any danger of executing any 'innocents' by mistake. Anyone who didn't speak up, or spoke up in defense of the usurers - off them! This is war and they were not there for us, they were there for them). The enemy's 'Elders' were standing their watch though. The usurers may have used very unconventional methods but this is a War, and you have been invaded, and completely overrun. Think about who calls the shots now, where, and who do your orders come from now? Who is at the Apex of the chain-of-command? You have been taken over completely by the usurer bandits from another state. So there is ZERO FORMAL RESISTANCE. And to maintain this, and eliminate the spread of INFORMAL RESISTANCE, they try to force the wayward 'under-achievers' into 'PARTICIPATION', but of course at a lower pro-slaver and pro-Pigman rate of 'pay', especially as they age, thus again increasing social divisions, via age, as well as sex, race, and class, and religion, and 'politics', and by countries. These divisions are all designed to keep us divided to we can never informally organize any serious challenge to their take over and enslavement. And they supplement the divisions with drugs, glitzy rubbish, distractions, utter trivia and a wall of almost impenetrable lies. And if it works, problem solved, threat to slaver elites attenuated. If it doesn't work that's just as good, as you are then an informal "enemy of the State", because the usurers now define the 'State' and they will find ways to make a dollar out of your division from THEIR slave society and speed along your oblivion in multiple ways at that point. Divided we fall. That's how they took us. And we are going to have to be aware of this and unite to remove them. So they are going to sew as much division and fear and mistrust as possible between us, to remain at the helm. We can't have 'freed' slaves!! Who default on fake debt-money loans, and thus have no debts, and no usury 'tithe' to them each month, and have no desire for 'credit' slavery either, and thus enjoy life at very low cost - how outrageous! Damn free-loaders! If such 'freedom-loving' utter bastards refuse to 'PARTICIPATE', well, we'll use Govt policy and social condemnation on them. We'll muster an army of robotic self-righteous media arseholes, to ideologically lambaste the selfish poor, and the under-employed for not taking "responsibility for their choices", etc. And thus we will create a truly poisonous divisions in society to prevent the danger of a unified awakening and response. And we will use their own military to threaten them into feeble submission. And they have done it! Any attempt to awaken and organize is thus defused by infiltration, and division, and extraordinary lies and fake 'event' contrivances. Thus making society and life as ugly as possible and the 'free' slaves increasingly vulnerable to financial crisis via removing any social supports or legal protections - in practice. The 'Law' is a very different beast when 'applied' to the scummy poor, and that's why they create so many asinine vexatious laws with absurd fine penalties plus generate increasingly arrogant aggressive self-righteous right-wing cops, to ensure you will eventually have some crisis, and come unstuck in some way, thus ensuing impoverishment, probable homelessness and hopefully a descent into hopelessness, or depression, if you don't understand what they are doing, and that you ARE in a civil-war with the PUPPET Govt of a foreign State. That is what is in the Oval office right and on the Hill, right now. They particularly like to drive us into self-destructive chemical addictions, which the usurers knowingly, both legally and illegally, import and sell very cheaply to suburban plebs for that very purpose. Thus to create entanglements and malaise and social destruction and even greater divisions and family pain, with the resulting disorderly behaviors, and absence of dangerous social-unity, and often suicidal or jail-time outcomes (with a nice profit on top). Oh yes, that is why the 'US Govt', which the usurers took over long ago, peddles cheap escapist impairing drugs to you, and yours. There is no "war on drugs", it has all been a ruse, there is only a war to control who supplies the drugs, the formal usurer 'Govt', or the informal black-market competition. That is what the 'US' DEA is for, to control who gets the cashflow. Either way you go in society the usurers get rich off it. They own the tenements, the Real Estates, they collect the rents, they own the police, they own the shops and the crops, they own the drugs, they own the car companies, they own the fuel, they own the electricity utilities, they own the tax legislators, they own the prisons, they own the weapon makers, they own the banks, they print the money. They can not lose. They are not keen on suicides though as it costs them potential income and adds to clean-up costs. So they sell insurance to "the vulnerable" to try and cover such losses. All of it is a tremendous rort! It's like what occurred when these same usurers 'freed' the Negro slaves, they kidnapped earlier from Africa. The masters had to pay firstly the usurer slave-traders, to 'obtain' the slaves and transport them, then to train, operate, feed, house and cloth them, and pay for their family health-care, and provide a security detail to oversee them and keep the master safe. It was expensive! But why not eliminate these slaver 'overheads'? The solution was "free them", so then, like the white slaves, they had to "take personal responsibility", and pay for all of it themselves, and still turn up for manual labor, each morning, for a slaves wage. "Congratulations, you have just been 'freed'! You are no longer a 'slave' - you have 'rights'! Now get back to what you were doing yesterday, or I'll take away your wages." So the usurers replaced the whip with the wages, then added debt and unemployment, to take the wages off them. It was much more profitable, and they called it, ... wait for it, 'Capitalism'. But you had to make sure the slaves 'PARTICIPATED' rather than had time to reflect on what just happened to them and what they actually got out of it ... and who did it to them ... and were they really any better off, or any freer, when dealing with THEIR 'Govt' or before THEIR 'Judges'? White or black, a slave is a slave is a slave, and we are going to have to become one to defeat this usurer clan, and they are going to try and play the race-card, to divide us again. And they WILL definitely try to create racial violence between us, and jealousy, and rumors, and resentments and blame. Our job is to decide in advance that they will fail to divide and weaken us on the basis of 'races', we are human slaves, and they are the usurer 'masters'. They did this. Debt = PARTICIPATION The indebted have to work under the fear of the whip of the Sheriff and repossessors calling. The usurers even invented group-insurance, paid for by the slaves themselves, against rising unemployment, to cover the debt repayments, in the event of substantial non-participation. They had all the levers of the new-slavery covered. They called the new-slavery, 'Equality'. Actually, nothing much changed for the next century, as it was only when the Negro slaves threatened and then used actual mob violence in the 1970s to press their demands, for social justice, that the usurers decided it was better for their bottom-line to offer social concessions, than to fight an urban war, which they probably could not win or benefit much from. And when, in desperation, some of the Negro leaders rejected Christianity and turned to Islam, the usurers then turned from race discrimination to religious division, and called them traitors or 'terrorist' guerillas. And thus began the war-against-terror, that continues its stupidity to this day, as a new source for usurer profiteering on behalf of tribal cabal interests who PRETEND to be the USA's true 'Govt'. It is a Strategic war and strategic wars are always total wars. There is one winner of such a war who gets to write the 'history'. I want that to be us, not the usurers. And that is what they desperately don't want us to notice, or dwell on, and what future generations must know about. Or else you meet a 'demise', for those daring to state what's really happening in our world today, and who's really doing it. When you see news reports condemning Vladimir Putin for intervening in the imprisoning of oligarchs, be aware, ALL of those mega rich oligarchs are usurer slavers - not one of them isn't. Putin knows exactly what they were doing to Russia, and he decided to do the world a big favor and make sure it was stopped so they could not make trouble all over the globe with the stolen loot. The bottom line is Russia has a lot of nuclear weapons situated very close to Israel, and the usurers would desperately like to take these out of the strategic equation by taking over Russia in the same way they have taken over the USA. Putin stopped them in their tracks and took what they took back from them, and threw them and their criminal helpers into jails and tried to rescue his country, and it has been largely been an outrageous galloping success measured over the past 15 years. Don't look now, but that's how you take your country back. In the end, no bailout, no stimulus package, no 'regulator', no 'judge', no acts of the people's Con-gress, no El-Presidente, will ever even attempt to fix this "inside-job" or to nail the arse of those that did it. They are one and the same, and a similar Nationalist leader will have to emerge, at some point, to take the USA's Govt and property back and we'll see what they are, from what they DO, not from what some complete arse of a fraud merely 'promises' to get elected, and do nothing, but create greater theft and police state oppression of the actual REAL citizens. Vietnam did succeed against a Superpower, and so did many other peoples who fought earlier foreign corporate 'colonial' takeovers and race colonization, but only to then quickly have their money supply and Govts taken over by these usurers! Wherever they could weasel their way into a young country, firstly via humanitarian 'aid' programs, that pretended to help, to get a foot in the door of the Govt, then take over the infrastructure, and services of the Govt, and then of the country, under the pretense of foreign 'investment'. They did it everywhere with less and less resistance. We are all being carefully destroyed, taken over from within by a virulent usurer enemy, that tries always not to be seen, to not be fully out-ed and to thus use proxies to pass the blame on to others, for the harm and impairments and structural stealing they seek to impose (in our "best interests"). Other times they just change their surname, to try and hide their real ancestry, and allegiances, so people don't realize who has taken over, and who starts and maintains the wars, and accentuates social division. His family changed their Surnames to hide their real identity as belonging to the usurers. Curious isn't it, that during this global era of obvious 'insider-job' Sovereign financial collapses, that the apparent independent 'third-party', charged with sorting it all out, in the "best interests" of these country's peoples, is also from the same usurer slaver camp as those who engineered the debt growth bubble-economies to create the largest pool of distressed-assets, in all of history, ripe for criminal financier 'harvesting'. They want to keep us separated and infiltrate anything that is not separated in order to divide it and defuse it. It always works, unless you know that's what they aim to do. And if we don't thus just splinter apart, then they'll paint it as a 'cell', and describe its leaders as "Nationalist demagogues", or outlaws, or mere 'racists', and they will take great efforts to impute they are dangerous 'terrorists'. And thus bring THEIR 'State' (the Inside-Job) to bare to crush whatever part of it they can. But they can only do it, if the public buy this crap, and agree with that characterization. The problem for them is; we can awaken in really big numbers. There are billions of us and a very small number of these usury slavers.  "So what, Desert Cat? Big deal. We don't have Apocalypse Now out in the streets." No, no we don't. Thankfully. The cliff hasn't gone straight down like a rock. But you would be surprised how many Cranio-Rectal Inversion sufferers still think things are going along okay if a bit more austere than usual. There is a good reason for this. TPTB do *not* want us panicking, and so all of their media outlets have been doing their damned best to keep the rose-colored glasses polished and firmly in place. That and two years (and running) of unemployment benefits to keep unruly mobs at bay. The unfortunate side effect is overshooting reality by a good margin and keeping people complacent rather than allowing them to take a hard look at what is happening and what is likely to keep happening, and making realistic (if unpleasant) decisions for the future. In other words, don't stop prepping for worse to come, Cats! Keep your BOB and BOV in shape. Keep your fallback and contingency plans current. And most importantly, keep looking for ways to get by and get along well in a world marked by a permanent and significant reduction in standard of living. Consolidate! Because this is our future, like it or not. Take a look at this graph: Real GDP is the actual economic activity of this country after the Federal hot air is subtracted out. Realize that this graph represents the rate of decline, so the last year has only seen us slow down our rate of crashing versus 2009, not actually reverse toward growth. Now tally up the percentage loss shown for the last three years. (-8%-13%-7% = 28%) Yes, that is correct. Our economy has shrunk a whopping twenty eight percent over the last three years! That's close to one out of three jobs gone. One out of three businesses out of business. One out of three factories shuttered. See the cliff now? See that the tumble is real and it is massive? It doesn't seem as "real" as the Great Depression, because Uncle Ben is running the printing presses overtime (see the blue line) and this one-third of the economy devastated by three years of depression is being masked by handouts and government hot air. But it is very very real. And that thirty percent lost economic capacity is not going to come back very fast at all. Consider this: a 5% growth rate is thought of as a healthy economic expansion. In order to recover from this thirty percent drop, the economy would have to grow by nearly 50 percent (do the math). Therefore it could take nearly ten years of uninterrupted prosperous times to retrace the losses of the last three years just to bring us even with 2007! And we're not done crashing... And absent some major technological breakthrough, there is nothing on the horizon to drive sustained real growth... And the massive deficits the government is running to "extend and pretend" is not sustainable. You've got some people going on two years unemployment benefits now, and more being added to the rolls every month. That is not sustainable! Not even for a couple more years! That is a short term band-aid for a long-term broken leg, and the leg is beginning to develop gangrene. What happens when they (congress, the president) realize this cannot go on year after year without completely and utterly destroying the nation? What if the Fed concludes the same and stops the presses to protect the interests of their oligopoly? "Ugly" does not even begin to describe it... Yes, it is a new year. Time to shake the sand out of your ears and wake up from your holiday season reverie. Welcome to real life. As I noted in the comments on the original "Impossible Gift" thread, the magic smoke got out of one of the shoes the first day. Since someone is likely to Google the original post, I want to add this follow up post on how I got the smoke back inside and how to keep it there for someone doing this themselves. (read the rest of the post at the link below) The problem was that when I extracted the electronics from the kids slipper, I pulled off some hot glue that was attached to the circuit board, thinking it was just incidental to the attachment to the slipper. Well it turns out that glue was actually reinforcing the solder connections of the wires to the circuit board. Because they were now just holding together by thin wires and solder, several connections broke inside the shoe. *Poof*, there went the magic smoke! Worse than that is I could not deduce where each wire had broken free from. I ended up ordering another pair of slippers and dissected one to get at the undamaged electronics, using it as a template to solder back together the set in the shoe.  For my future reference, the gray battery wire is common to the top switch wire, and the white battery wire is next in line. The bottom two switch wires go on in either order on pad 3 and 4, and the end pad has no connection.  Here's where we pick up with additional instructions to supplement the original post. To prevent a reoccurrence of this problem I cut a strip of sheet styrene (model builder's styrene) and glued the components to it. You could use anything similar that is thin, has some strength, and is slightly flexible.   After the glue set, I carefully trimmed the excess styrene board off around the components, added another layer of Goop over the top side of the wire connections, and tucked the assembly back inside the tongue.  A line of Goop and clothespins to clamp the seam shut, and it is ready to go again.  posted by Desert Cat @ 6:36 PM | permalink Getting The Smoke Back Inside (Part 2)It's been beastly cold all weekend here and I've had no desire to buck up and deal with it. Instead I've been doing indoor projects. Some of you may recall the Motorized Bicycle Project from *last* Christmas. Well, the smoke got out of that one too, and Daisycat seemed to lose interest in it shortly after receiving the gift (plus there was that infamous spazz-out incident mid-year...), so there was no incentive whatsoever to take my time to address the issue.

But finally now after nearly twelve months, she's expressed interest in it again and wants it fixed. We worked on this together last weekend, and since I was stuck indoors, I continued working on it today.  The problem has been one that I was aware of from day one--namely that the front and rear sprockets were not well aligned. This caused the drive chain to hop off the sprocket with depressing regularity. I knew that the solution would be going back nearly to step one and fabricating a new method of mounting the engine to the frame to permit better alignment. So the engine was removed from the front and rear mounts, and the extra pillow block mount on the rear was removed. This permitted the engine to be more sturdily mounted to the seat pillar. From that mounting point I was able to rotate the engine so that the front sprocket aligned precisely with the rear sprocket. This however left the front mount decidedly off-center to the lower frame member. I devised a mounting bracket that allowed for this shift and also permitted a solid connection so there would be no shifting around once everything was tightened down.  While this solved the alignment problem, it created a big problem with the muffler. The muffler is a tight fit between the lower frame tube and the pedal crank when the engine is centered over the lower tube. Shifting it to the right caused the muffler to conflict with the lower tube. I shaped the muffler body with a vise and a block of wood, and also with some finish shaping directly with a blacksmith hammer on the anvil, repainted it with high temperature paint, and now it mounts just fine.  Moving the engine meant I needed to extend the wiring harness. From last year's post you may recall I had to retrofit the wiring with spade lugs anyway, so this was a simple matter of creating a little spade lug extension cord and rewrapping the whole thing in electrical tape again.  The gas line also needed extending, but instead of using the crappy plastic tubing that came with the engine, I replaced it with proper fuel line.  Right now I've hit the wall, as I need to cut the drive chain shorter by a couple of links and I cannot find my punches anywhere in this chaos. Perhaps tomorrow I will drive into town and buy a new set. After reinstalling the chain, the last thing I need is a handful of zip-ties to secure the wiring harness, and it should be ready for a test drive. Surprise surprise (not). I have my own experience with both low fat and low carb diets to inform me, and I am totally not surprised that the "official", "scientific consensus" of the "medical community" is finally beginning to come around to the notion that the low-fat mantra that the official channels have been pushing for over thirty years now is turning out to be a massive failure. Here is the simple truth: simple carbohydrates make you fat. Dietary fat is not the culprit. Cut out the sugars (including HFCS), starches (potatoes, etc.), refined grains (bread, cereals, crackers, even rice cakes!), eat moderate quantities of meats (even fatty meats), fish, poultry, healthy oils (such as olive oil), and lots and lots of vegetables, especially raw leafy green vegetables, and you will be much healthier and will lose weight. Don't be afraid to indulge occasionally in some less "healthy" fats, such as cream cheese and ribeye steak. They satisfy you quickly and thus reduce your overall calorie intake. Complex carbohydrates have their place in moderation, but they are best consumed in the form of the starchier vegetables and legumes rather than nearly any form of grain. One of the best tools for gauging the advisability of any carbohydrate is to look up its glycemic index. The lower the better, because high glycemic index foods spike blood sugar which leads to fat storage. Now that the holiday season is past, I'm working my way back to eating this way again. I lost a lot of weight years ago on the Atkins diet, and it was only because I went back to drinking sugary sodas after a couple years that I gained it back. I have yet to look in detail at the Paleolithic diet, but I have heard good things about it as well. Now that "science" is coming around to our way of seeing things, perhaps there will be a little more support for this way of living.
